John Talty on his Book About LSU Head Football Coach Lane Kiffin Entitled “Lane Being Lane”

After reading the excerpts in Vanity Fair from John Talty’s book “Lane Being Lane: The Story of Lane Kiffin, College Football’s Agent of Chaos,” Nick & Chris knew they had to speak with the author himself! Today he joins them for a revealing look at the man many consider the biggest jerk in college football coaching.

We remember the scenes of Nick Saban just absolutely screaming at Lane on sidelines. And even for me, I wanted to know more about what was driving those kind of things. And we know that those guys are different personalities, right? There was conflict of the Nick Saban way of doing things and the Lane Kiffin kind of growing up in that Pete Carroll model way of doing things.

So that led to natural conflict. But what I learned from talking to a lot of people there at that time and even covering it at that time was that the off field stuff hung over their relationship, that Lane’s behavior, frequenting Tuscaloosa area bars, frequenting trying to pick up women and things like that, that created a fracture in his relationship with Coach Saban. He at one point had to tell at least one coach and his staff, you’ve got to keep Lane Kiffin away from the college girls and make sure they at least have a job if he’s going after them.
