Your Friday Night Football Hosts:
Doug Konkel
Doug has worn a lot of hats in his sports media career: calling college baseball games as a student at the University of South Alabama, a site publisher for Scout.com and 247Sports.com, play-by-play announcer for two Armed Forces Radio’s broadcast of the Senior Bowl, and promotions director of 680 the Fan in the station’s early days. However, there is nothing he is more proud of than being a founder of 680 the Fan’s Friday Night Football, especially as it (and he) enter the 20th year of bringing high school gridiron action to fans across Atlanta and beyond. Doug is a native of Fort Walton Beach, Florida and longtime resident of the Atlanta area. He and his wife, pediatrician Dr. Laura Zucker, live in Alpharetta where they raised their two sons, Ben and Sam, to be good citizens and great sports fans.
Karl Werl
As one of the original members of 680 The Fan’s Friday Night Football broadcast team, Karl Werl enters the 20th Anniversary Season as the lead play-by-play voice of the Game of the Week. With more than two decades of broadcasting experience throughout the Southeast, Karl has built a respected career behind the microphone, covering everything from high school football to collegiate athletics and professional sports.
Karl began his broadcasting career in 2001 with 790 The Zone in Atlanta, where he worked as a producer and sports reporter. During his tenure, he covered the University of Georgia, Atlanta Falcons, and Atlanta Braves, while also producing both daily and weekend programming.
His play-by-play career started with Emory University, where he called baseball, softball, and basketball. He later accepted the role of Director of Broadcasting and Play-by-Play Voice for the Fayetteville SwampDogs of the Coastal Plain League in Fayetteville, North Carolina. During his time with the organization, he earned the opportunity to call the league’s All-Star Game in Wilson, North Carolina, as well as the prestigious Petitt Cup Championship Series.
While living in North Carolina, Karl expanded his football broadcasting resume by calling high school football games and hosting a Saturday morning high school football recap show. After returning to Atlanta, he transitioned back into the business sector but never stepped away from the broadcast booth. He continued freelance play-by-play work for GASports.com, Georgia News Network, and Georgia Public Broadcasting, calling numerous marquee events, including the GHSA Football State Semifinals and Finals, high school basketball broadcasts, and regular-season and playoff baseball games in the Sunbelt League.
His extensive experience and passion for high school athletics ultimately led him to 680 The Fan, where he became the play-by-play voice of Friday Night Football. Over the years, Karl has broadcast many of Georgia’s premier high school football matchups, including the state’s highest-classification semifinal and state championship games. During his more than 20 years behind the microphone, he has had the opportunity to call games featuring numerous future collegiate stars, NFL players, and even future Major League Baseball talent, giving listeners a front-row seat to the early careers of some of the Southeast’s most accomplished athletes.
A graduate of the University of Georgia, Karl earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1993. Today, he continues to bring energy, insight, and a deep appreciation for high school sports to listeners across Georgia each Friday night
