The Mitsubishi Electric Classic is two weeks away and with it comes the modified Stableford scoring system, which was spear headed by Atlanta’s own Stewart Cink, the ambassador to this premiere PGA Tour Champions event.
The Stableford system is a point-based golf scoring method where players earn points on each hole according to the number of strokes taken relative to par, rather than counting total strokes as in traditional stroke play. The objective is to accumulate the highest number of points over the round, thus encouraging aggressive play and reducing the impact of a single bad hole on the overall score.
They use this points format where you’re rewarded a little bit more for beating par and you’re punished a little bit more for losing the par. So there’s more volatility and there’s a little bit different game plan. The players choose a little more aggression. – Stewart Cink
