680 The Fan (ATLANTA) – Wiley Ballard, a longtime Atlanta Braves insider and current on-air personality for Braves television, joined hosts Colin and Brian on the “Chuck and Chernoff Show” to reflect on his broadcasting journey and the latest team news. Ballard expressed deep gratitude to his mentors, noting that Chuck and Churnoff helped shape his career while crediting Colin and Brian for pushing him forward. He embraced his fun “Dancing Bear” role on Braves broadcasts, emphasizing that his primary goal is to report, inform, and entertain fans during the long 162-game season. Growing up in Atlanta, Ballard feels honored to contribute to the rich tradition of Braves television that has been meaningful to his family and the local community. He remains open to eventually calling games but currently enjoys being a lively part of the broadcast.
The conversation turned to the recent benches-clearing incident involving Braves pitcher Reynaldo López and Angels outfielder Jorge Soler. Ballard, who had ringside seats near the dugout, described the chaotic scene in vivid detail, including coach Walt Weiss’s impressive tackle on the much larger Soler. He viewed the suspensions—reduced to five games for López—as reflecting uneven blame, noting Soler initiated the confrontation by charging toward the mound while López left the rubber still holding the baseball. Ballard downplayed concerns about catcher Jonah Heim’s reaction time, explaining the bizarre timing and replay distraction made it difficult to intervene quickly. Inside the clubhouse, the incident was not seen as a major issue.
On roster matters, Ballard discussed the pitching rotation’s ability to absorb López’s short suspension without adding a sixth starter, highlighted the veteran-heavy pitching staff, and weighed options for managing three catchers once Sean Murphy returns from rehab. He praised utility man Mauricio Dubón’s strong recent play and energy but stopped short of declaring him the permanent shortstop over the recovering Ha-Seong Kim.
Finally, Ballard humorously prepared for an upcoming on-air eating challenge: a massive two-pound sandwich featuring braised short rib, crispy pork belly, and more. He joked that his whole life of stadium food had been training for this “Olympic” moment.
