ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves today named Walt Weiss as the 49th manager in franchise history after spending the previous eight seasons as the club’s major league bench coach. Weiss, who previously served as manager for the Colorado Rockies, has twice been a World Series champion: first as a player with the Oakland Athletics in 1989, then as the Braves’ bench coach in 2021.
Weiss, 61, has been a part of the Braves organization for 11 seasons as both a player and coach. He began his tenure as Atlanta’s bench coach in 2018, helping lead the club to a 680-513 record (.570), second-best in the National League and fourth-best in Major League Baseball. During his tenure, the Braves have made seven postseason appearances, earned six National League East division titles, and won the 2021 World Series. As a player for the Braves from 1998-2000, the former switch-hitting shortstop slashed .257/.354/.329 (210-for-818) and was named a starter for National League at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 1998.
The Tuxedo, N.Y. native has spent 12 seasons on a major league coaching staff. He earned his first managerial appointment in 2013 with the Rockies, for whom he skippered through the 2016 season. Preceding his time as the club’s manager, Weiss worked for the organization as a special assistant to the general manager from 2002-08.
Weiss was drafted out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by the Athletics in the first round (No. 11) of the 1985 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Over his 14 year MLB career, the 1988 American League Rookie of the Year posted a 16.5 bWAR and a 14.8 fWAR across 1,495 games with the Athletics (1987-92), Florida Marlins (1993), Rockies (1994-97) and Braves.
Both Weiss and Alex Anthopoulos, President, Baseball Operations and General Manager, will be available tomorrow, November 4, in the Truist Park press conference room. The third base media gate will open at 10:00 a.m., with the availability scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
