Braves Acquire RHP Griffin Canning

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves today acquired RHP Griffin Canning from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for OF Jorge Soler.

Canning, 28, has played his entire five-year major league career with the Angels, compiling a 25-34 record with a 4.78 ERA (270 ER/508.0 IP) over 99 career appearances, 94 of which have been starts. During the 2024 season, Canning made 32 appearances, 31 starts, logging a 6-13 record and a 5.19 ERA (99 ER/171.2 IP). He fanned 130 batters, while issuing 66 walks.

A native of Mission Viejo, California, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-hander was originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the second round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft from the University of California, Los Angeles. He made his major league debut during the 2019 season and was a recipient of the Gold Glove Award in 2020.

 Soler, 32, batted .241/.338/.442 (119-for-493), with 21 home runs, 34 doubles, 64 RBI and 84 runs over 142 games during the 2024 season with San Francisco (93) and Atlanta (49). A veteran of 11 major league seasons, the 2021 World Series MVP was acquired by Atlanta on July 29, in exchange for LHP Tyler Matzek and minor-leaguer Sabin Ceballos – marking his second stint with the club.
