Atlanta deals minor-league RHP Tyler Owens to Texas
ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves today acquired OF J.P. Martínez from the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor-league RHP Tyler Owens.
Martínez, 27, made his major league debut for the Rangers last season. Across 17 games and 44 plate appearances, he slashed .225/.250/.325 (9-for-40) with a double, home run and four RBI. Martínez last season was named an MiLB.com Organization All-Star after he batted .297 (90-for-303) with 41 extra-base hits and a .963 OPS with three different affiliates. Originally signed by Texas as an international free agent in 2018, the Baracoa, Cuba native is a career .257 hitter (434-for-1,686) in the minor leagues.
Owens, 23, spent four seasons in Atlanta’s minor league system, reaching Double-A Mississippi last season. Across 77 minor league games, the Ocala, Fla. native has pitched to a 5-15 record and a 4.37 ERA (82 ER/169.0 IP). Owens was selected by the Braves in the 13th round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player draft.
