The fall semester starts at Georgia today, so Richt's Bulldog team has put a wrap on camp. They celebrated with a traditional watermelon feast. This was a good start to the season. Camp was solid.
Richt didn't waste any time getting down to business. They hit as soon as they put on the pads. Did some tackling to the ground, before the first scrimmage rolled around. He pushed this group hard. Fortunately, they didn't suffer any big casualties, as far as injuries go.
DE Ray Drew had a concussion, which has set him back. He missed 6 practices, but should be back in there soon. Now the CB's are a little banged up: Malcolm Mitchell and Branden Smith have sore shoulders and Damien Swann has a sore neck. OL Austin Long was injured, so that hurt the depth up front.
Sounds like the O-Line---the team's biggest concern---play has been encouraging. Gates, Lee and Burnette have locked down spots. Andrews has started to settle in at center. The big news is how freshman John Theus has stepped in for Kolton Houston at right tackle. Meadows, Matt Stinchcomb & Trinton Sturdivant were able to step in a freshman and play right away. Add Theus to that elite list. Dude is polished, strong and smart.
Looks to me like the RB position competition is showing that all 4 guys will get playing time. Gurley impressed in the 1st scrimmage and is off to a quick start. He might be the best all-around back. Marshall is a nice change-up, because of his make'm miss skill set. Malcome and Samuel can both bang in in there between the tackles. All of them will play.
Buffalo is up in 19 days. There are 26 days before the big trip to Missouri.
