Braves Draft Lucas Sims #1

Jun 04, 2012 -- 9:42pm

The Braves drafted Brookwood HS RHP Lucas Sims, with the 21st pick of the MLB Draft. It comes about a decade after the Braves cashed in on Gwinnett County products Jeff Francoeur and Brian McCann. Maybe this one works out too.

Sims had committed to Clemson. He's a polished, confident pitcher. Throws a mid-90's FB and a hard, sharp-breaking curve. Reports say he is developing a change. Lucas was the Brookwood SS, when he wasn't pitching. Good athlete, uh?

This is a good pick. I've always liked to see the Braves stay close to metro Atlanta. It's rich in talent. No reason to ignore it and go searching for players elsewhere. Believe Heyward was the local guy taken by the Braves in the 1st round. That was 2007.

Lucas Sims made some noise, when he was invited to USA Baseball's 16U trials in 2010. He recently pitched a scoreless inning for the 18U team, against the Collegiate National Team. Good motion. Looks strong.

The Braves passed on RH Marcus Stroman, who went (22) to Toronto. Clemson #B Richie Schaffer went #25 to Tampa Bay.
